TPF announces grant to David Mitchell for the release of Perl 5.10.1
It is with considerable pleasure that TPF announces today a Perl development grant to David Mitchell for the release of Perl 5.10.1. David's work through this grant will be: The vetting and application of 400+ outstanding patches to the Perl 5.10 codebase;A rework of the "smart match" feature semantics to address known issues;Packaging of a Perl 5.10.1 release distribution. The funding amount of this grant is USD $5000, which is meant to provide support for David at a half-time level over the 2-3 calendar months it is anticipated this work will require. David has been a Perl core hacker since 2001, and is the release manager (a.k.a. "pumpking") for the 5.10 series maintenance branch. This grant is supported by Rafael Garcia-Suarez, the Perl 5.10 series development branch release manager, and Nicholas Clark, the Perl 5.8 series release manager. Nicholas will also be the grant manager for this grant, which means he will maintain communication with David to ascertain the continuing process of the grant work and will determine when the work milestones of the grant have been achieved.Funding for this grant has been generously provided by Dijkmat BV, The Netherlands. This Week on perl5-porters - 20-26 October 2008 "So we have an existing bug. Sometimes \400 matches \400, and sometimes it matches \01\00, depending on what I would call spooky action at a distance. I'm trying to get rid of these inconsistencies. I think something should be done here, but perhaps its not what I thought it should be. My patch follows what the code was intending to do, but perhaps we should change that intention. Please guide me." -- Karl Williamson, trudging around in the depths of Unicode.Read more of this story at use Perl.

What is missing from Padre?
I have started to develop Padre about four months ago and version 0.14 that has just arrived to CPAN is already slightly usable. I'd like to get your help to find out what are the most important things I should focus in the next four months? I am sure you either use vi or emacs and you are totally satisfied with your development environment but, please for a short time imagine you are stuck in a well paying job and your management mandates you to use Padre. Please give me the 5 most important things that are still missing from it so you can also say it is usable. In order to do this obviously you will have to install it which might be a bit difficult if your OS does not come with binary version of wxPerl. On the other hand if you are lucky you'll only have to type cpan Padre, answer a few questions and wait till all the prereqs get installed. For some help with the installation check out the download page. Thank you for your helpRead more of this story at use Perl.
