I love subways and urban trains. They promise labyrinthine explorations and the sheer joy of getting lost in the unknown. They are fast, efficient and cheap. They are also smooth enough to allow reading, and generally comfortable enough to allow relaxed conversations - except for rush hour, when they tend to turn into sardine cans of humanity. Then the usual pleasantness of the commute can become a hellish expansion of minutes - especially if you have a breakdown in the tunnel when it is crowded - during the cold and flu season and when it has been raining. It still beats walking, or watching the numbers spin upwards on cab fare.
