NaNoWriMo Failure! An incredibly lame self-justification that you too can use!

OK, so the final word count looks pretty pathetic.  I think I actually may have written a word or two more, but I didn't have the heart to update my totals (on either the main NaNoWriMo page [1], or in Second Life [2] write-in boards). But I'm still excited, because this is one of those moments where the usual spin about turning failures into triumphs is less hollow! So where did it all go wrong? where did it go OK? Here is the skinny:

Ok, now that my failure is excused by that lovely list, what (if anything) did I learn that I can do/undo for next year?

I know successful novelists who don't participate in NaNoWriMo, because they feel it doesn't sync with their process.  Good for them! Obviously they don't need the kick in the butt that NaNoWriMo provides to get their book out the door. I have concluded that the crazy deadline that I don't meet still has a wonderful effect on my writing and planning, and does get me in gear enough to make a good beginning even if I don't make a good end. That's why I will still keep coming back and feeling good about failing gloriously, because I still get a lot out of it that way. The process begun has its own plot twists, and it really is about the journey more than the destination (now there's a wonderful cliche - the kind that comes in when you write too much and edit too little!)  Besides if I ever get 50,000 words in a month, there's probably no living with myself!
