The Other California

I took a few random snaps while in Northern Baja last month, and have finally got around to posting them.  You can view them here.

I hadn't been for seven years. There was a lot of new development and more Northern retirees down there now - one fellow told me that he liked living in Mexico, because it reminded him of living in the U.S. in the fifties. It was a lovely place to be, even with a cast on my arm, but will want to go back when I can do some kayaking, fishing, etc.

The Bodhi Tree

From the balcony in the back of my office building,
I see a Buddhist monastery over the fence,
including ochre-robed monks, ceylon-brown bald heads,
an eight-point-wheeled driveway gate, and a tree;
a planting of the famous Bodhi tree from Bodhgaya,
under which an insight dropped on the head of the Buddha.

It was full and green, promising to drop big figgy insights
on the ceylon-brown heads of those ochre-robed monks,
who encircled it with a profound platform and little white fence.
Quietly and mindfully, the garden was weeded of needless thoughts.

Those tropical monks knew nothing of the cold apocalyptic frost
of Northern winters and the suddenness before such judgements.
The tree bore no insightful fruits, and so was withered.

"Cover your tree next time", I yelled from the balcony.
Watching the mind without guarding the heart is a dream.
Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchmen keep awake in vain.

Merry Christmas!

Other than stupidly breaking my arm, it has been a wonderful Christmas,
with the choir in full swing for many wonderful services

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

Java goes GPL!

Sun said they'd never do it....but they did!

Richard Stallman is understandably ecstatic.

Check out the details here and here.

The big question....Will all of the previous fears of endless fork fragmentation be justified? Does it matter?

The Latest Machine: My Moped

Meet Zoe Autocephaly!

Zoe, because this really makes for a new life, and Autocephaly, because it is a Tomos brand ;-).

Specifically, it is a Tomos Revival ST. 100 MPG, a ripping 30+MPH :-).  The faux gas tank holds my coffee (high octane), while the smaller real tank holds gas.  I am enjoying this far too much. Consequently I am now creating a moped page on the Virtual Town Square

Death to the World - Old Issues Online!, New Issues Coming!

In 1997, the official 'zine of "Punks to Monks", Death to the World, was nearing the end of it's run with issue #11. I was making or getting copies and leaving them at the local punk coffeehouse in the lower haight.  They always went fast.  I always intended to scan them, but I never had a full set and some of them were hard to get.

Well someone has completed my intended labor of love with action, and now the whole set is online (except that a large portion of #7 seems to be missing).  A website dedicated to the old 'zine (pdfs to be found in the "links" section) can be found at:

LinuxWorld Expo: Tired instead of Wired?

[LinuxWorld wraps up]

Well, I have been meaning to post my review of Linux World Expo, but haven't been able to get it out till now.

The dot org pavillion was back on the main floor, and not stashed upstairs like the previous year, but this was because the show was back to being smaller, and was located back in the old Moscone hall.

It was generally a lackluster show, despite a decent slashdot space,
and was mediocre on the swag index as well.

The Orthodox Answer to MySpace Now Online!

http://www.orthodoxcircle.com

Added to the friendster, myspace etc. realm is this site, which is just for Orthodox Christian friendly folks.

It isn't too big yet, but it looks promising - groups, blogs, chats and other features that will probably drill
down into the minutiae of Orthodox Social Life (tm).

Science Addiction has posted the 95 Theses of Geek Activism.

It's worth reading if you haven't yet.
